Brigid, The Law & Responding to Women’s Rights in Today’s World
For the 2020 BrigidFest talk Magistrate Fiona Hayes will speak about how her work with women before the courts in Victoria touches on Brigid’s concern for human rights and fairness, and aims to offer women hope in the face of life and family challenges. Fiona will refer to current laws in Ireland, particularly their influence on women’s rights.
About the Speaker
Fiona Hayes was born in Fethard, Co Tipperary and educated there and in Limerick. She has worked as a solicitor-advocate in criminal law, in anti-discrimination law for people with disabilities and with Victoria Legal Aid. As a Magistrate she coordinated the Latrobe Valley Courts prior to her return to Melbourne where she now is the Co-ordinating Magistrate for the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal.
